History of Nairne |
Introduction
Nairne is a town in
between Mt Barker and Brukunga. It has one school. There have been schools in Nairne for
the past 1 50 years.
Nairne is found in the Adelaide Hills. The population is 2040 and growing. There are four
sporting clubs that I know of. They are football, netball, golf and tennnis. |
The
township
It was first settled by
Matthew Smillie. Sadly he died in 1847. His wife was called Mrs. Elizabeth Corse Nairne.
He named the town after her.

THE CROOKED BILLET
This house was built by James Shakes in
1845 (who also built one of Nairne's first cottages in Shakes Road). It was used as an Inn
(1851 to 1860).

Chapmans factory
In 1899 the Chapmans factory was
established in Nairne. It was shut down in 2002. They killed the animals and made
ham and bacon. It was shut down because Chapmans are moving their factory to Murray
Bridge.
